Roero’s trails

Back on Roero trails then, finally I was there again but this time I was taking photos with my new Canon 450D. You can see immediately the difference in quality of the digital images, there is no match at all compared with the old works and pictures.
The basic element in the Roero’s landscape along those trails we decided to follow, is the geological formation ‘Le Rocche del Roero’.

As you can see in some photo some huge erosional patterns dominate the hills, they were caused by Tanaro river when it diverted its course 250.000 years ago. This past event created deep canyons and picturesque sandy walls once sea beds.

Due to that in Roero is possible to note different micro climates blended together into a few hundred meters of altitude: typical dry vegetation grow on top of the ridges, stagnant water creates wetland habitats at the bottom, there are also several famous secular chestnuts trees.

Walking with a friend of mine we got lost as usual for a while but finally we had our picture of ‘Castagna Granda’ the oldest and biggest chestnuts tree dated 400 years old.
