Gloucester

My days in Boston were quite strange, and also I got some kind troubles with my Asian girlfriend wondering how can our story go on as we stay so far each other. The weather was once again terrible but I was determined to get my way to Gloucester by train and think about my life on the Ocean’s shores.
My fellow camera followed me of course but was even hard to keep it decently dry with that weather. Nevertheless some nice images of Gloucester comes up.

Gloucester was founded by an expedition called the ”Dorchester Company” of men from Dorchester, England in A.D. 1623.
This date allows Gloucester to be the first settlement in what would become the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The town was an important shipbuilding center, the community developed into an important fishing port, largely due to its proximity to Georges Bank and other fishing banks off the east coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
In the late 19th century Gloucester saw an influx of Portuguese and Italian immigrants seeking work in the towns flourishing fishing industry and a better life in America.
Seafaring and fishing have been, and still are, very dangerous undertakings. In its over 350 years history, Gloucester has lost over 10,000 men to the Atlantic Ocean.

The names of all the lost that are known are painted on a huge mural in the main staircase at City Hall, and also on a memorial cenotaph on Stacy Boulevard. The list has continued to lengthen despite increased safety requirements.
