Roads in Laos

During the 12 hours bus trip from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang we got a 5 hours forced stop due to a small landslide that closed the only road along this mountains.     This road is quite dangerous during monsoon season so is definitely better get a plane to Luang Prabang. Few years after my trip, on the very same road, some tourists were shot and died during a robbery of the bus. I have anyway to say that Laos is very peaceful country and I feel myself very safe there, much more then in some street in Turin… Continue reading

First time in New York

After the college I visited New York in 1991 with one of my friend; we spent there a couple of weeks in a YWCA hostel in Manhattan. We do enjoy the city looking around, eating outlandish food, visiting museums, traveling in the all neighborhoods. At that time I still was into dinosaurs so the American Natural History Museum in New York city was another lifetime dream after the one I had in London years before. We entered into New Jersey hitchhiking and we were also too young so no one gave us something to drink or permit us to enter… Continue reading

Kom Ombo and Nile

Following images along the Nile we arrived in Kom Ombo, another magnificent archaeological site along the Nile river. When the boat stopped by the light was still too strong, but not bad at all. I loved use the wide angle over there taking photos and losing myself behind columns or bas-reliefs. As you can see in the photos the crocodile was held in especial honor by the people of Kom Ombo; and in the adjacent catacombs are occasionally found mummies of crocodiles and other sacred animal.     Decimus Junius Juvenalis, in his 15th satire, has given a lively description… Continue reading

Portland

Here I’m once again on the train, another one day trip from Boston, this time I got a train headed to Portland , the principal city of the Maine state. I was interested to visit some lighthouses but I got lost and walked for miles before find my way out. Anyway was a good day with no rain and a good light. I’m pleased with several of the photos I have done in Portland.     The construction of Portland Lighthouse began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington, and was completed on January 10, 1791. Whale oil lamps… Continue reading

Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai

In Chiang Mai is very famous the “Loy Krathong” festival held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. During the festival people prepare a krathong a small rafts made of bread to be sent do the river currents. The reason for using bread for the krathongs is to protect the environment since having many rafts in the river can create a huge water pollution problem. Finally bread will become food for fishes and other animals in the river.     Banana leaves is another… Continue reading

Valley of the Kings – Colossi of Memnon – Temple of Hatshepsut

In a hurry, as always, here is the last day of the trip along the Nile, awoke at dawn to visit the Valley of the Kings. We are on our arrival in the area greeted by twin statues of the two “Colossi of Memnon” which represent Amenhotep III in a seated position with hands resting on his knees. In addition to some balloons already waiting for customers, I suppose, the rising sun, and was immediately a great image to be fixed. Nearby, a few kilometers, spring up here in front of the complex of Deir el-Bahri, Valley of the Queens… Continue reading

Si Phan Don

Si Phan Don means 4,000 islands and is a region of Champasak Province in southern Laos. There is not much to do here but definitely is a nice nature and environment. It is a very good place where to find peace and relax. The sunsets and the photo opportunities were marvelous.     The Mekong River flows through the province and, just above the Cambodian border, is broken by the Khone Falls, a large number of rapids which make this section impassable to river traffic. During French colonial times a railway was completed in 1924 for transportation across the rapids… Continue reading

Wat Phou Champasak

In southern Laos the small town of Champasak, along the Mekong river, worth absolutely a visit because is the location of the Khmer ruins of Wat Phou Champasak. I arrived in Champasak from Thailand through the Chong Mek border crossing, towards the city of Pakse. I got my Lao visa in Bangkok but is also possible obtain it from this border post.     Wat Phou Champasak is located at the base of mount Phou Kao, few kilometers far from the Mekong river in Champasak province. There was a temple on the site as early as the 5th century, but… Continue reading

Saluzzo

Traveling in Piedmont, in Italy, you must stop and visit Saluzzo a magnificent and spectacular example of medieval architecture perfectly preserved during centuries. The opportunities to take good pictures in Saluzzo are really many. Saluzzo was for four centuries, an independent and proud marquisate; a territory with vocation for fruits, a fertile and generous soil. The day I came across visiting Saluzzo regretfully was cold and foggy, not really ideal for the shots I had in mind, and the beautiful castle named “Castello della Manta” with its Renaissance frescoes was closed for restoration.     It is not sure, of… Continue reading

Turin’s sunset in Piazza Solferino

One of the most famous historic squares of  Turin is Piazza Solferino, located at busy center of the city. The realization of Piazza Solferino started in the second half of the nineteenth century, after the dismantling of the fortifications of the Citadel of Turin in 1852. The main decoration of the square is the fountain Angelica with four groups of statues that refer to the four seasons.     The esoteric legend says that between the statues there is a magic door, a gate to the infinite. At the center of the square you see the Atrium pavilions designed… Continue reading
