Italy photos 2011 – digital works

Saluzzo

Traveling in Piedmont, in Italy, you must stop and visit Saluzzo a magnificent and spectacular example of medieval architecture perfectly preserved during centuries. The opportunities to take good pictures in Saluzzo are really many. Saluzzo was for four centuries, an independent and proud marquisate; a territory with vocation for fruits, a fertile and generous soil. The day I came across visiting Saluzzo regretfully was cold and foggy, not really ideal for the shots I had in mind, and the beautiful castle named “Castello della Manta” with its Renaissance frescoes was closed for restoration.     It is not sure, of… Continue reading

Mole Antonelliana with snow

Last winter, I realized that I had never photographed the Mole Antonelliana as seen by the royal gardens. In this website you will find some other photos of the Mole Antonelliana, it is virtually impossible to come to Turin to photograph the city without its symbol, the one which makes it a unique city with a unique profile. The construction of the Mole Antonelliana began in 1863, and was originally intended to be a Jewish synagogue. The draft of the Mole Antonelliana was revealed long and costly and a series of changes made by Antonelli, the architect of this work,… Continue reading

The Devil’s door in Turin

In Turin, in Via Vittorio Alfieri, stands an old building, now hosting a Bank. The building has a beautiful huge door of carved dark hardwood. Palazzo Trucchi di Levaldigi, so you call the building, is an imposing building erected in 1673 by the minister of finance of the House of Savoy, it was designed by Amedeo di Castellamonte. The door is decorated with flowers, angels, fruit, but what can not be unnoticed is the clapper in the center of the door, shiny, a smiling a Devil. All Turin, known this place as the Devil’s door. It was once also home… Continue reading

Triora

The third and last step of our excursion in Liguria was the medieval village of Triora . Triora is really in the middle of nowhere, in the heart of Liguria, far from the sea and far from Piedmont separated by high hills and mountains covered by a dense forest. Triora is located in the Argentina Valley at 780 m above sea level on the southern slope of a ridge of mountains; has been reviewed as one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Italy. The day was ending, the weather getting worst, but the place was absolutely amazing.    … Continue reading

Dolceacqua

The second stop of the trip in Liguria, after a quick sandwich, was Dolceacqua, a beautiful medieval village in the Nervia valley. The oldest part of Dolceacqua is dominated by the Castle of the Doria. The most modern part is developed on the opposite bank.     Dolceacqua apparently existed since Roman times, archaeological studies confirm that fortifications were manned from the fourth century B.C., to protect the villages, pastures and fields. In the twelfth century the nobles of Ventimiglia built the first nucleus of the castle, so in this they could control the access in the surrounding valleys. The… Continue reading

Life and dead in Turin

This is a series of shots made in Turin in different circumstances, a walk in the old town and a visit to the cemetery. As I watched these pictures of Turin, I immediately realized that they went along, they were opposed and antithetical, but inevitably attracted each other. Life, games, fun, a clown, the street, church, religion, tombs. All what is inevitably a life and all what is inevitably death at its end, all concentrated in few clicks.     The first photos were taken in Piazza San Carlo, one of my favorite squares in Turin, then via Giolitti and… Continue reading

Turin, parade of Alpini Corps 2011

The last day of the event in Turin was held the big parade where marched over 90,000 Alpini. The parade lasted ten hours, and the event was felt even more this year because we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, and Turin was the first capital of Italy. The people stand hours under the sun on a beautiful spring day to see them marching, applauding. The banners you can see in the photos highlighted very well the spirit of the Alpini Corps, such as the absolute dedication to the people and to maintain a united Nation fighting… Continue reading

Turin’s statues of rivers Po and Dora

It was a beautiful day, so I decided to go to photograph Piazza C.L.N. in Turin, once called by my ancestors Piazza delle Chiese. The current name comes from the National Liberation Committee, formed in Italy by the end of fascism. I do not live far away and I promised myself to do these shots, just found the time. Once in Piazza C.L.N. I realized that the problems were two: the people who always sits on the edge of the fountains, and the light, that I wanted homogeneous and similar for both statues. This last one was not an easy… Continue reading

Angels in Turin

Looking around in Turin be careful where you go, not only could happen to bump into monsters, demons, Gargoyles, but also angels. Turin, the magical city, is a set of forces of good and evil. The angels that I photographed are to support the balcony on the first floor of a strange building on the corner of Via Pietro Micca with Via San Francesco d’Assisi near Piazza Solferino. Not much is known, the building once looked at the square but now is almost buried, obscured, hidden by a huge and horrible fifteen floors building dated back to 60′. This is… Continue reading

Abbey of Santa Maria di Staffarda

After Saluzzo, in our trip, we kept the original idea to visit the Abbey of Staffarda, unfortunately the weather did not help us. Actually the site does not look in optimal conditions, especially internally, as we see in photographs of the windows. The atmosphere were serene, peaceful, suspended in time of a site so rich in history.     Staffarda Abbey was built around A.D. 1100 on land donated by the Marquis of Saluzzo Manfredo to the monks of the Order Cistercense to make it a center of reclamation for the surrounding countryside. Within a short time, in the Piedmont… Continue reading
