Portland

Here I’m once again on the train, another one day trip from Boston, this time I got a train headed to Portland , the principal city of the Maine state. I was interested to visit some lighthouses but I got lost and walked for miles before find my way out. Anyway was a good day with no rain and a good light. I’m pleased with several of the photos I have done in Portland.     The construction of Portland Lighthouse began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington, and was completed on January 10, 1791. Whale oil lamps… Continue reading

Salem

I was in Salem during a terrible raining day, actually I went there just for fun without expect anything special. There is nothing special there as the whole town is just a place for play with tourists that have nothing better to do. Nothing looks real and all the witches’ gadgets and shops make all feeling worst. Basically is like a Disneyland about witches. It was quite hard to get good photos with the never ending rain but my wide angle lenses helped me with some good image.     Salem was founded in A.D. 1626 at the site of… Continue reading

Back in New York

I can not believe that I’m another time in New York, my first journey was in 1991 for a couple of weeks, now is 2010. Many things have happened since then, nineteen years are already gone. Probably the truth is that I can not believe or accept that this time passed. During my main travel in Boston and New England, I definitely could not miss a short trip of three days in New York. I got the opportunity to refresh my mind, to enjoy the journey in New York with my Asian girlfriend, spend a nice week end and visit… Continue reading

Boston City

Boston is the capital and largest city in Massachusetts, one of the oldest cities in the United States, and the unofficial “Capital of New England”. Boston is also the center of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people. I spent there three weeks visiting my Asian girlfriend studying there, and I have to say that definitely is a nice city full of young students, nice place for living. Boston was founded on A.D. 1630, by Puritan colonists from England. The Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony are sometimes confused with the Pilgrims, who founded… Continue reading

Boston’s beach

I went to Boston’s Orient Heights beach, with my Asian girlfriend to spend the afternoon there, there was a nice sunny weather but with a really cold breeze.     We spent nice moments there, she was looking for some nice shell to be collected and I was taking a look around. I loved that couple of shots I took of her walking. We were literally surrounded by some sea gulls, I have to say quite an aggressive specie, especially if you try to eat something without sharing with them.   [iframe http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=h&msa=0&msid=114577138258621988630.00048915dc9ad974bca35&ll=43.052834,-70.290527&spn=3.853337,7.03125&z=7&output=embed 490 490]   NOTE: - the photos… Continue reading

Plymouth

I got lost also here, unbelievable, I got my train from Boston to Plymouth and once there at the station there was not one single indication, or a bus stop, or something, or someone to ask for. I walked for miles once again along the beach and finally arrived in the center of the town that definitely disappointed me as everything was obviously a fake reconstruction of Pilgrims houses and boats. Prior to the arrival of the Pilgrims, the location of Plymouth was a village of 2,000 Wampanoag Native Americans called Patuxet.     In 1605, Samuel de Champlain sailed… Continue reading

Boston’s Granary burying ground

Founded in 1660, located on Tremont Street, the Granary Burying Ground of Boston is the third-oldest cemetery. It is the final resting place for many notable class Revolutionary War-era patriots, including three signers of the Declaration of Independence and the five victims of the Boston Massacre. The need for the site arose because the land set aside for the city’s first cemetery, King’s Chapel Burying Ground, was insufficient to meet the city’s growing population.     Boston ‘s Granary burying ground was originally part of the Boston Common which then encompassed the entire block, but two years after the cemetery… Continue reading

Boston’s Marathon 2010

The Boston Marathon was originally a local event, but its fame and status have attracted runners from all over the world. For most of its history, the Boston Marathon was a free event, and the only prize awarded for winning the race was a wreath woven from laurel branches. However, corporate-sponsored cash prizes began to be awarded in the 1980s, when professional athletes began to refuse to run the race without cash awards. Women were not allowed to enter the Boston Marathon officially until 1972. In 1951 during the height of the Korean War, Koreans could not entry into the… Continue reading

Gloucester

My days in Boston were quite strange, and also I got some kind troubles with my Asian girlfriend wondering how can our story go on as we stay so far each other. The weather was once again terrible but I was determined to get my way to Gloucester by train and think about my life on the Ocean’s shores. My fellow camera followed me of course but was even hard to keep it decently dry with that weather. Nevertheless some nice images of Gloucester comes up.     Gloucester was founded by an expedition called the ”Dorchester Company” of men… Continue reading

Rockport

After Gloucester, during the same day, I was determined also to visit Rockport, another small town not so far. Despite the nightmare of weather, despite I was completely socked I got another train to arrive there. It was definitely better then Gloucester, and far more a tourist place for rich people with a Cottage on the Ocean’s rocks. By the beginning of the 19th century, the first granite quarries were developed, and by the 1830s, Rockport granite was being shipped to cities and towns throughout the East Coast of the United States. As the demand for its granite grew during… Continue reading
