Claviere, geology and photos
Claviere is a small municipality along the Alps located 80 km west of Turin, on the border with France.
Basically a well equipped and organized skiing village.
I have a good friend of mine in Claviere and quite often we are going out together visiting places of geological interest because we were companions at University during my studies.
One of the most interesting geological tracks near Claviere is the path going to “Colletto Verde”.
Just on top is preserved an ancient and completed sequence of the so called ‘Alpine Green Stones’.
It start from ultramafic rock then we have mafic rocks such as dark, coarse-grained gabbros, basalts layers, veins of basalts, pillow lavas with few radiolarite and sediments.
The outstanding aspect of the sequence of Claviere is that is really few affected by the Alpine metamorphism and not only the chemistry but also the structure of the rock are basically intact.
It is really amazing to consider and picture that those pillow lavas where formed 2000 meters below the ocean; today they lies at 1800 meters above see level.
At that time I just had my new Canon 450D since few weeks so I was still learning the basic.
I have shot some photos in Claviere at sunset waiting for dinner and also some images during the excursion at “Colletto Verde”.
- the photos have been realized with a digital SLR Canon 450D, wait to load completely the page before click on the pictures, be aware that it can take several seconds -
