Sacra di San Michele abbey
Sacra di San Michele was one of the most famous Benedictine abbeys in northern Italy near Turin.
According to historians, in Roman times a military stronghold existed on the current location of the abbey, commanding the main road leading to Gaul from Italy.
It is one of the greatest architectonic buildings in Europe among those dating back to the Romanesque period.
Sacra di San Michele was founded between A.D. 983 and A.D. 987 as a result of the needs and the culture of the pilgrims of that time, and it soon became an important spiritual center and a great crossroad for cultural exchanges, a destination of numerous, frequent, visits.
A special law of the Region Piedmont defines the Sacra di San Michele as “Symbolic monument of the region Piedmont”, under the special management of the Rosminian Fathers.
When I was there regretfully a huge restoration was going on so not all views and potential images of Sacra di San Michele were available and accessible to shoot photos without troubles.
Beside that the work is pretty good and I have to say that my Canon 450D was great inside the Abbey considering a quite total absence of light it did miracles.
